Bike runs like a champ:
83 KZ550A4, pipe, jet kit, pods, smog block-off.

Is there a need to do a coil upgrade to an Accel coil or similar?

Thanks,

Brendan

Nope.

An Accel brand coil is imo a good coil, but not necessarily an "upgrade." A good coil is a good coil. Whether it's Accel or factory Kaw or another of the known brands such as Dyna or Emgo or Andrews and likely others.

But if the coils are 33 years old, it's probably time to start considering new coils and perhaps also new spark plug wires.
More than one of us have limped to our destination on two cylinders when one of the coils failed. Sure beats pushing.

In any event, assure that the coils have a resistance value (ohms) as required by the ignition. The specs for a stock ignition will be covered in the Factory Service Manual (FSM). If the ignition has been replaced with a Dyna-S, a 3 ohm Dyna coil is recommended by the Dyna folks.

I recently bought and fitted some new standard coils, leads and caps. Well worth the expense IMO

When you say standard, do you mean stock or aftermarket?

Other than stock, can someone recommend a good "universal" 3 ohm direct replacement. I have searched but I am scrambling my brain at this point. I am looking at about 200.00 for NOS coils from Kawasaki. I mean if I have to bite the bullet on NOS, I will but would like to know other options out there. I know KZ part numbers are different on coils but will some work with others. I found the same to be true on my older CR500 dirbike with rims. Even though the part numbers were different, the still fit. For example, will the LTD 550 coil work?

The Dyna ignition coils may be mounted with the spark plug wires exiting forward or exiting toward the rear (at least on the large fours).

In this example, the spark plug wires exit forward, which is how stock ignition coils are routed from the factory (at least on the large fours).
