Lots - take a plug out, put the plug wire back on it and rest the plug body (metal part) against the head, making sure it is contacting bare metal on the head, such as a head stud nut or bolt or a bare spot on a cooling fin. Don't hold the plug or plug wire with your hand - 10 000 volts hurts BAAADDDDD! Turn the ignition on, crank the engine in the "run" switch position and look for a spark across the plug gap (you might not see it if it is too bright outside). You should check both cylinders, one at a time, this way.
If you have power and ground to the coils and no spark, then the bike's electronic ignition system has a fault (I am assuming the '81 440 has an electronic ignition vs. points). Check the coil primary resistance against the factory specifications. If that checks o.k., then check the resistance of the crank trigger coils. In my experience, the crank triggers fail from age and vibration first, as they are mounted on the engine. If the triggers check out, then the CDI unit might be the problem. Of course, you should check for continuity between the components through the wiring harness and all the connectors.

Hope that helps....

Three requirements are:
Spark --- Compression --- Fuel

Spark could possibly be okay.

Would next consider compression.
Compression test?
Valve clearance within specs?

Good Fortune! :)
