After bike going dead several times [sometimes in traffic on the freeway] a close examination of the main fuse showed it not blown but melting the solder right out of it. Determined the problem to be oxidation of the fuse clips holding fuse in the fuse box. Obvious high resistance at the fuse clip melting the fuse. Roadside fix was a spare fuse to get into town, buy some sandpaper and clean up the fuse holder clips. Problem solved. Later in my garage I unbolted the fuse holder lifted it up and polished the inside of the clips with a dremel fitted with a wire brush. Always carry spare fuses!

Loose or corroded wiring. Systematically disconnect and reconnect wiring. Use electrical cleaner on the contacts. Here's more information: www.kz-1000.net/post/2452771049/engine-dies-suddenly-electrical

Thanks, Kap, the thread you mentioned led me on the trail to hunt down the problems I was having. Prior to the oxidized fuse clip issue, I went thru every connector and switch on the bike with contact cleaner. Definitely a worthwhile project - specailly for those of us near the ocean.

I've had exactly the same issue when I got my 2000 kz1000P getting stranded on the highway once and in traffic on a few occasions. Cleaning the clips on the fuse box didn't really help me so I just replaced the fuse box with the modern one with blade fuses and never had an issue since.
