First of all get a proper manual for your bike - the factory Kawasaki service manual. There are free downloads available if you look around and search this site.

Regarding the spark plugs, D8EA is correct for most KZ550's. I believe that means that you are 100% incorrect. :side:

Found the download link for you...gpzweb.s3-website-us-east-1.amazonaws.com/Mnls/Mnls.html Throw that Haynes manual in the fire starter box and put the paper to good use.

I joined this page for a bit of helpful advise not dick answers. The zx550 a1 uses a NGK DPR9EA-9
The KZ550 A3 uses a NGK DR8ES and the laters use the D8EA

Which I think is the wrong year for my engine
I believe my engine to be a A2 engine
With little mention to this in the manual is why I came to this page

Clymer gets a lot of guys in trouble. You need a FSM. Ed and a few others know more about the small fours than I do so I listen to them. B)

Yeah, the Haynes manuals are pretty terrible. My preferences: a paper copy of the factory service manual would be ideal, followed by a paper Clymer manual, and then the electronic copy of the FSM. The price is right for the last one but it's not as easy to search in my opinion.

Like Ed and Patton said, you want the D8EA plugs assuming it's a Kz550A2 or USA KZ550A3 model. Canada and some parts of Europe got the resistor plug on the Kz550A3.

The Zx and Zr bikes are not officially Kz's.

It's more important to know what you have in case the previous owner changed something.

The only issue is whether the spark plugs are resistor or not. You can determine what you need, regardless of what the manual says, by measuring the resistance of your plug wires and plug caps. If either one has high resistance (and was designed to have high resistance, you use the D8EA plugs. If both, wires and caps, are non-resistor, then you use the resistor plugs DR8ES.

The link Ed provided will get you to the various online manuals. I suggest you download all of them.

If you are planning on buying new plug wires, then you decide what you like better, resistor-wires (aka suppression-wires), or resistor caps (that's what connects to the plug), or resistor-spark-plugs. Only one of those three options should be resistor. The other two should be non-resistor.

I prefer resistor wires. They are usually very available at any parts store. I've had bad luck with resistor caps and resistor plugs failing, but others prefer them.
