I am stripping my '76 KZ400D3 electrics and rewiring the entire system. I do not plan on using a color-coded wiring scheme.

Many people CHOOSE to use color-coded wires for ease of identification, but are there any reasons that they MUST be used?

How will you be able to do any point to point checks if you have a problem on install or develop a problem down the line? What is the plus side of going monochrome?

They use colors to make it easier. In some modern bikes they use number coded wiring. Because it was probably cheaper

To keep from being murdered by the next person who has to fix it.....

The electricity will get confused and won't know which way to go.

No need for colours but the wire gauge is critical, thicker for headlights, alternator, ignition switch to fusebox etc.
You could number the wires to aid identification,

I wouldn't want it myself, one of those things for either the really clever or really stupid. I don't really see the point.

Actually I don't even see the point of rewiring, I'd look to replace any dodgy block connectors and terminals first, then trace any faults. The odd bad wire can be replaced and taped to the loom. . ..also there are crimps inside the loom but not shown on the diagram - for example the yellow/black grounds.

If you must, pin your old loom to a board and copy the old one.

The wires are about the same length so the resistance will be equal. That's why you will find some looped back on themselves. They did this for a reason.
