I think u reverse biased the diodes and Zener so it shot the entire battery voltage to ground backwards and just blew the fuse open.
I would not be surprised to hear there is no damage other then the 20 fuse.

I exchanged the battery, and Battery Plus gave me a $10 credit for my troubles. You're right, the fuse prevented any damage from occuring.

I checked the voltage across the battery at various RPMs, and found it to be a steady 13-13.5V (analog multimeter) all the way to 8k RPM. I'm still not sure what killed my old battery.

If they run dry, the cells can short. I'd better check mine. It's been a long hot summer.

Make sure you bring a couple of cold ones out for yourself, while you're checking your battery , Steve, ...we don't want you to get all dried out,

That happened yesterday on the ride home. BLAST FURNACE :S I see it's getting nasty in some places back east already. Riding season is ending there but is about to start here. There's 5 acres out here for camping if a west coast ride is in the plan. I even have a nice little house available to the more civil among us. It belongs to one of my longest and dearest clients. Just putting it out there.

I don't think anyone addressed what you said in your original post about the triple tree lock. I never knew it would pull down the battery. Does it on this bike? I put a brand new, charged and working battery into my bike (the same one as yours) yesterday, tested, ridden and parked last night...this morning, dead as a door nail. Sure, it could be a multitude of things but it would be super convenient for me if this were the case. It would narrow down where my short might be.
