Hello everyone. My kz650 has gone through a lot. I had issues with it running good then falling on its face when I tried to take off. I figured it was electrical issues. The harness has been hacked up pretty good. So I decided to yank the whole harness and make a new one from scratch. The bike is kick start only. Running a ub1222 2.2aH battery. Led tail, turn signals and a led 30 watt h4 bulb. Dyna coils and dyna ignition. The stock regulator/rectifier crapped out on me about a year ago so I slapped in an ebay special China scooter regulator. Now I'm wondering if the cheap regulator just took a crap or is it something in my wiring. All new wire, new bullet connectors and waterproof connectors throughout. And this regulator is a 4 wire not a five. I ran the red wire (power) to the brown wire off the ignition harness. Should it be connected to the White instead? Would that make a difference or should I stop being so cheap and get a good regulator.?

Yes. Buy a quality regulator. Contact the folks at the link below. I have been using one of their rectifiers on my KZ650 for several years now and it works perfectly. I'm sure their regulators are of the same high quality. Ed

I just won a used reg/rect on eBay from a KZ 1000 MKii. It works but it is slow to charge until the revs get to 35/4000. I needed one and it was worth a shot. Was looking at a new one for $25 free shipping. Too cheap, don't trust it. I will but a new one when I can afford one. Need a chain and sprockets soon and tires always.
The brown wire goes to the instruments, the red/white one goes to the battery. You can fry your battery and other components. Get a good one.

The attachment came from The Old Kaw Man on the net. He has some Z1/KZ parts and has a good site. I bought a used Reg/Rect from him in 13. Had some bad connections and ruined it. He sold me a KZ 1000 rear fender for $45.
He's been very helpful.

Are you using a Analog, or Digital multimeter to check the voltages? Some Digital meter are sensitive to magnetic fields, and may give a strange reading. If possible, borrow a Analog(moving needle, multimeter), and try again.

Thanks guys. Yeah I'm using a digital multimeter. I still think it was high cause my horn sounded ridiculous and now my headlight went out. Think it burned it up. That's what I get for a 9 regulator. I plan to change the stator out for a 3 phase once I get some money.
