Hey guys. I'm new to the forums and actually just picked up a 1980 kz750 a few days ago. I've been having problems with the electric start. When I got the bike it had a 2 yr old battery in it and had set for this winter. When trying to start it with the old battery the electric start almost sounded like it was struggling, not turning over hard enough to fire up. It would kick start after about 10 kicks and the lights even before starting would work fine. I replaced the battery with a new one and now the electric start and the horn both won't work but when it is kick started it will fire up like right away. I know this topic has been covered but just looking for a little more insight. Could it be the rectifier? Switch? Fuses? Short in a wire? Any help would be greatly appreciated

It won't be the rectifier. That unit is part of the charging system (it converts AC to DC) and doesn't affect using the electric starter.

I suggest you start by ensuring the connections at the starter solenoid, battery cables (including where the negative cable attaches to the frame or engine) are clean and tight. Also, be sure you pull in the clutch lever when trying to use the electric starter (some folks forget). Ed

Cool thanks for the information. Like I said I'm not too knowledgeable on bikes as I normally only work on cars and trucks. I'll look into your suggestions and keep the forum updated

Even if the bike is in neutral the clutch has to be engaged?

Yes. There is a lock-out switch in the clutch lever perch. It senses whether or not the clutch lever is pulled in, and it does not care if the tranny is in neutral or any gear. If you don't pull in the clutch lever the lock-out switch interrupts the starter button circuit and prevents power from energizing the starter. Ed
