I need a lesson on how different bulbs are rated by Lumens.

I'm aware of three factors: Incandescent, candlepower and Lumens.

1. Kawasaki 12volt 7" incandescent bulb.
2. 12volt 7" H4 sealed beam Halogen bulb
3. 12volt LED fixture with 5000 lumens

Was wanting to up my night sight with a brighter headlight system. I have slightly bad eyesight and wear glasses, the combo makes night riding a challenge.

I'm running a 7" 55w/65w sealed H4 Halogen bulb now. I was wondering what this bulb would rate in Lumens on high beam?

Some claim these numbers: A standard H4 puts out 1100-1500 lumens and draws 55-60 watts to do so

I'm not worried about state laws based on brightness and am aware of it, so we can skip this.

If you need a LOT of light you can try a 100w H4 halogen bulb. I used them for several years in a Marchal lens, and I believe that light could be seen from Jupiter! It turned night into day. The bulbs usually are marked "For Off-road Use Only" because they can cause problems for oncoming traffic if you keep the lamp on high beam. The problem I ran into was that the stock wiring was not intended to carry such a load, so eventually it cooked a connector. It never blew a fuse or had the circuit fail, but the connector turned brown and sort of changed shape. If you decide to go that route I recommend you run a dedicated circuit between the headlamp and battery and control the circuit with a relay. My stock generator handled the load without a problem. Ed

The only thing I know for sure is when I went from the stock factory incandescent headlight to the halogen H6024, it looked like about 2 - 3X as bright and much whiter light. I think it's a 65W high beam?

Not sure about LED, but simply going by Lumens alone ca be deceptive because it doesn't tell about light pattern or distance.

Check out this light it is what I am using,. Just as bright as an HID and less voltage requirements than a halogen and its DOT approved. High/low beam also. I have not got to use mine yet but someone else on the forum is also using this light and he said its a really bright head light.

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationSorry Steve I just saw this. Here is some literature that should answer all question performance wise.

Around $175 unless you have a bid sniper for eBay.

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationJust bought myself one of these HID conversions. $20.
Will install for Spring and will give a review.

I have a HID light and it's brighter on low beam than my car's highbeam.
Some times on bends at night I can see the driver squinting.  Also helps with spotting stray kangaroos waiting to jump out in front.
The bulb shifts back and forth to adjust for hi/lo. And runs on I think about 3 volts after initial start up. Plug in and play no fucking about. Very happy with it. :cheer: :cheer: :cheer:

cycleterminal.com has some very nice high temp headlight sockets. Even Autozone has high temp sockets.

I haven't bought a light or conversion, but have looked and considered all suggested.

Thanks for all the help.

Lots of discussion about this on another forum, problem is even if the lights are brighter, leds are not designed for standard housings anymore than HIDs so the beam spread is different. There is also so much flat out lying by bulb mgs, it's really hard to know what's true in terms of real performance. If you do go with a high output led, make sure you're stock housing will accommodate the cooling fans these things require and in the case of HIDs or high wattage halogens ensure the wattage is not so high it damages/burns the reflective finish on the inside of the housing, damages wiring or the plug ends. I've spent a lot of money on leds and so far don't think they're any better than incandescent especially since they'll need a load equalizer installed to work properly at least in the role of brake/ts applications. Also important is kelvin, since the color of the light affects how easily the eye can perceive it. Leds generally yield a brilliant white light at around 5-6 Kelvin, while halogens don't go much about 4500K which is why they look so yellow compared to leds or to HIDs which can run up to 8 K, which gives a purplish light but doesn't help increase visibility.
