I'm going to go shopping this afternoon and am in need of some good tools. I have a shitty multi meter. And I want a decent one . Is there any recommendations and should I purchase any other tool for checking all electrical bits on this thing.
Thanks

For testing continuity I use a cheap analog multimeter. It is perfect for that one task because the needle jumps immediately when continuity is broken or established.

For ever other electrical task I use the meter shown below; I bought at a long time ago at Radio Shack. It works great and I really like using it. It measures voltage from 400mV to 1000v and measures AC and DC current from 4mA to 20amps. It also measures resistance from 400 ohms to 40M ohms.

I don't think the same model is available (mine is old) but if you can find one with the same functionality you should be fine. If you can't find one with the same functionality at a reasonable price, you may want to give ebay a shot to see if one like mine in good condition is available. Ed

I'll add that most digital meters have a continuity check tone that works well, as long as the battery (usually a 9v) is strong. It will usually/often look like this:

Digital meters do have a continuity check, but unfortunately there is a delay before the chime rings. That makes them worthless for doing certain tasks where it is crucial that you detect the very instant that continuity is broken; such as when setting the points. These tasks are easily done with an analog meter because the needle reacts instantly. Ed

An old Simpson would be great to have. Someone borrowed my old Micronta and I never saw it again. I had to settle for some cheap ebay unit from China. Some tasks are just better on an analog.
