OK-My friend installed an 810 WISECO kit in this bike, along with other goodies(Dynojet,K&N,V&H,Renthal,PROGRIP,All Balls,82 KZ750-R1 Oil pan cooler lines and oil cooler,etc.)-no paint or seat yet,but I want to install either a Low Fuel Warning Lamp,or a Fuel Tank Gas Cap Fuel Gauge on this bike.
What I know so far is that I could do option #2 if I got a 76-79 KZ750B fuel tank, petcock etc.,or I also found a 1981 KZ750H fuel tank(purple :P )in my garage, that has the petcock on it as well as the sending uynit/switch installed on the bottom of it.
My questions are these(from my knowledge of it):
1)Would the KZ750B fuel tank option be easy to frame mount?(I had a 1978 KZ750B,and all I remember is that the front was the same to mount, but the rear mount, was some kind of rubber band thingee, and the petcock was non-vacuum type with dual feed). For this set-up Diablo Cycle in Canada, and Z1 Parts.net in California has these for 100$ US.Other questions, would the stock seat be OK fitting wise, and would this tank then interfere with the top of the motor at all,due to the profile of the tank(for both of these questions).
2)For using the 1981 KZ750H fuel tank,I think I would have to install a wire and/or switch,as well as changing the speedo to a KZ750H one(or maybe a KZ650SR one-I had a D1A also),that has the Low Fuel Warning Lamp feature built into it.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated! B)

The 750-Twin stuff probably won't fit without some fabrication work.

The 750H Ltd tank should be a direct bolt on. Someone here stated that the E tank will bolt on to the Ltd H, so it should work the other way around.

Just an FYI: the Ltd H tank is only ~3.2 gallons. The 750E is 4.2 gals.
Also, the 81-82 E models came w a Low fuel switch & there is a Fuel check switch that works in conjunction w it. The low fuel warning light on the E2/E3 may be in the center pilot box panel or the tachometer. The E2/E3 pilot box stuff is different from the E1 & doesn't have a volt meter.

Why bother? That's what the reserve position on the petcock is for. Next thing ya know you're going to want turn signal beepers and a side-stand alarm. Then comes the power windows  Ed

The low fuel warning system is a neat feature --- the 650-CSR has it. :)
After it comes on, I can go about 10 miles before having to switch to RES --- at that point I know I better find some fuel within the next 20 miles or thereabouts. Occasionally I let the fuel level drop just to make sure it's working.

THANX for the humor 650ed!
What I really want is a cigar lighter and a coffee mug holder though!

I think I'm OK with this 81KZ750H fuel tank(PURPLE :P ),because the rear fitment on my 80KZ750E frame is round(not oval),I'm going to assume the 2 wire sending unit/switch is OK.Anyone know how to test them?
It has a petcock which is the same,I'll take it apart and clean it. The cap I'll just scab off my Red 80KZ750E,or I might pop for Z-1 Ent's chrome replica one[81-1042],(I just talked to Rob over there). Then I'll prolly just scab a used set of clocks off eBay from a 81 or 82 KZ750E-I saw a nice set there, and I noticed the low fuel lamp is in the pilot box socket assy.(Will have to add a wire or two I guess). If anone has done this and can give knowledge-THANX in advance!

The 750E & 750H attach the same & have the same rear mounting hardware except the E has a different bolt part number.

Low fuel switch. The 81 650 manual doesn't have any info for checking it directly. I guess you could do a resistance check??? I have a new one that I could test & compare it to a used one.

OK-Here's what I know so far-the hardware(at least the grommet-they call it the muffler damper rubber, and the metal collar that is dished on one end-they call it the engine head collar)is the same, and then mine has a seal plate washer and a wing nut(aka a carrier fitting bolt)-which fits through the purple H tank-all good! :woohoo:
As far as the switch goes, near as I can figure from a digital(and Sears at that)ohmmeter, there is 3.86 ohms, between the two wires on the switch(a black w/white stripe wire-grounded to the switch, and a yellow w/black stripe wire insulated from touching base of switch-prolly hot).
Martin let me know what you get on your resistance check on your new one.
Also,I found a used pilot box upper cover,w/ socket plate and socket set and lower cover-I'm going to try that, because the only other thing they changed that I can see,is the low oil pressure warning lamp is now under this cover, rather than inside my tachometer. I'll have to work with that!

Stock fuel level switch on bike & submersed in fuel = 4.4 k ohms (BL/W wire & Y/BL wire).

NOS fuel level switch (27010-1096) = 1.2 k ohms in air (black/white & yellow/black).
(1.28 k Ω @ 76o & 1.22 k Ω @ 88o, so the resistance goes down the warmer it gets).

I plugged the NOS switch into the wire harness, then turned the ignition switch to ON -->> the warning light glowed within about 30 seconds. I think there's a thermistor in the little can.
(tests using VC97 digital multimeter).

You could test yours before installing it --- the circuit on the 81 650 is:
battery (+) -->> Ign switch -->> warning light -->> fuel switch -->> grnd

PS: is the ohm symbol displayed ??? --->>> Ω ... Thanks.
