I picked the bike up for 750.00 dollars. First few things I saw was the rear shocks needed to be put back on it and there are some issues with the wiring. It has an aftermarket starter solenoid and by the looks of it, they cut the harness in a few spots under the seat to wire it up. When I hit the start button, nothing happens. The neutral light in the gauge doesn't even flicker. I see a Black wire with a yellow stripe hanging around. It has a loop on the end like its meant to be grounded to something but when I touch it to the frame, it kinda sparks like maybe im shorting the battery. Im going to mess with the bike some more when I get home but can anyone help me figure out what that wire does? I remember black with a yellow stripe being an important one when I was messing with my other KZ1000.
Oh yeah... and long time no see. I haven't posted on here in forever because ive been busy with cars more then motorcycles lately

Black/yellow wire is a ground wire.

With the ignition switch in OFF position, the black/yellow should not spark when touching it to the frame.

With the ignition switch in OFF position, is it for certain that there's no current being drawn from the battery?

Exactly which '81 KZ1000 model is it? (So the correct wiring diagram may be referred to.)

Its an LTD. I even checked to make sure there was no tach port on the front of the engine.

Does the black/yellow wire appear to be part of the stock wiring harness?
Where does it exit the harness, and does it appear to exit the harness in the stock position?

Does the loop on the end of the black/yellow wire in question appear to be a stock fitting?

Anything else observable to help determine the wire's corresponding location as shown on the diagram?

I took a look at everything just now. I compared all the cut bits and where they go to my daily rider. everything is correct. So heres my new issue, I had it cranking with spark on cylinder 4 (didnt check the rest). I changed the plugs and wires and now have no spark on any of the 4 cylinders. However, if i turn the kill switch on the right hand controls ON and OFF the plugs will jump. Im not sure if i unplugged something or what. All the fuses look good too.

What ignition? Stock (igniter)? Dyna-S? Somethinbg else?

Looks to be all stock. And i found that cylinder one (left coil) sparks normally. But the right side coil only jumps when i turn the killswitch on and off. Also seems like that coil is really warm but the other is cool to the touch.

cylinder one (left coil) sparks normally -- does cylinder four also spark normally?

I figured out that it was the right side coil having the issues. So i know what parts to order now bike should be on the road in the next few days.
