I have a non-running 77' KZ1000A I'm trying to restore. Is the ignition switch connector supposed to be a 4-plug or 6-plug end? Mine is a 4-plug, but then again I don't know if it's the original or not? Bike had the wrong speedo ( 140mph ) and tach ( 7800rpm). It has no ignition key for it and unable to read any code on it. Want to order another ignition assembly w/key for it but want to make sure I get the right on. Seems like the ones I saw are 6-plug only?

Stock connector is a six piece connector that connects the six wires from the ignition switch to the six wires from the electrical harness.

Should be a wiring diagram here on-site. (I'll take a look)

This link should allow downloading the wiring diagram:

Click here > www.kzrider.com/filebase/search/viewdown...-general/246-z1000a1

After opening the link and pressing the "Download" button, the color wiring diagram should download okay with Adobe Reader (and perhaps other programs).

Good Fortune! :)

Patton, I picked up a used wiring harness off of a 78 KZ1000 on ebay for my 77' KZ1000A and what I have observed is that the ignition connector is a 6-pin connector? The one on my bike is a 4-pin connector? Any ideas? Like to use this purchased harness on my bike since the one that is currently on the bike has a lot of areas that have been either cut or spliced? Is that possible?

1977 KZ1000-A wiring diagram shows a 6-pin ignition connector.

Am noticing that the connections table shows 2 white wires (groan).

Would guess the 4-pin connector resulted from wiring alterations.

What colors are the 4 wires from the ignition switch to the 4-pin connector?

To avoid hacking on the new replacement harness with the correct 6-pin connector, it may be feasible to replace the 4-pin connector with a 6-pin connector, so that wires colors are matched into 6-pin harness connector.

Z1 Enterprises may have available a 6-pin connector.

Good Fortune! :)

Patton, I purchased this wiring harness off of ebay item # 121359583480. It was advertised off of a 78' KZ1000? The 6-pin connector for the ignition switch which I believe is at the end of the harness where the plug is for the headlight is colored orange/green, white, blue, red, yellow, white . No brown wire? My harness that is currently on my 77' KZ1000A is colored red, blue, brown, white . It has a 4 -pin female connector that is the same as the ignition switch 4-pin male connector end with the same colored wires as the harness. I'm beginning to wonder if this harness that I purchased is off a 78' KZ1000? All I can tell you is when I purchased this 77' KZ, the harness was mounted on the bike and plugged into the receptacles at the back half, but forward from the coils it was just hanging on the bike. What had me concerned about the existing harness on the bike is that there were 5 cut wires approximately 1 1/2 FT. back from the headlight plug end of the harness? Their colors are a brown wire which is located next to 2 other brown wires, one of them going to a 6-pin female connector and the other brown wire going to a female spade end connector. The other 4 cut wires are black, brown/white, blue/white, yellow white. They are also in the proximity of the 6-pin connector and also by a single blue wire that has a female bullet connector end. I was hoping that this purchased ebay harness could replace what I have, but so far seems to be a lot different? As usual any help is GREATLY appreciated and Patton thank you for your prior posts!!!

The FSM (Factory Service Manual) includes wiring diagrams for
1977 KZ1000-A1
and
1978 KZ1000-A2

Here for comparison are the ignition switches and connections as copied from the FSM.

Am relatively sure that the 1977 KZ1000-A1 at hand began its life with the wiring as shown in the FSM.

Note that each of the switches has two WHITE wires.

Good Fortune! :)

Patton, So do you think that the wiring harness that I currently have on the bike is the right one? Have any idea what the cut wires go to? Or given the correct information that you provided, should I use the wiring harness that I purchased? KIND OF STUCK, WHAT DIRECTION TO GO? Don't have a problem purchasing a new 6-pin ignition switch since this on did not have a key and no key code on it to even make one.

The ig switch you have can be made to work. There are no correct switches for mine so I reworked the wire connections to the switch, they just solder on. If you have the wiring diagram, and an Ohm meter, you can do it. Ohm out the switch to verify what contact sets connect when you turn it on and use it to make the connections to the harness.
