Hi everyone,

I gave a Lithium Ion Ballistic battery a try and that thing died fast on me. I guess it's not good for bikes that are hard to kick over (starting in cold weather, among other things). So, I'm moving on. Does anyone know what Yuasa sealed battery I would need for a 1976 KZ400D, or Parts Unlimited sealed battery. I'm looking for the actual battery ID number. There are so many and any online shop where you can put in your bike info, tells you to get a convention battery and I don't want one of those.

I'm not sure which battery your bike uses, but I would get a Scorpion from BatteryStuff.com if you want a sealed lead acid (absorbed glass mat). My buddy tried several brands and that was the only one that lasted for multiple years. I have two and they are going strong after several years. I was only getting a year (or two if I was lucky) out of standard lead-acid batteries.

Mine have lasted about 2-yrs. I got a Ctek US 0.8 smart charger about a month ago, so it'll be interesting to see if it will make the battery last longer: the charger has a desulphation step. So far, compared to an old basic Schumacher unit, it seems to be doing a better job as the battery is holding a stronger charge for a longer period of time.

I got the scorpion sealed AGM and it has been great, really cranks. Never again hassle with putting acid in a battery. The Li batteries seem to be OK for some bikes and die quickly in others.

This is the one that fits mine, yours might take a smaller model?

thanks for all the input so far. Seems a lot of you like Scorpion Batteries. I'm partial to Yuasa. They've been great in all my other bikes, so I'd like to stick with them.

Note that Yuasa batteries ship with the acid separate so you have to add it before charging. Why you care: aside from the hassle of screwing with acid, some states (like California) have tight restrictions on shipping hazardous materials. There are steep fees and restrictions involved. I don't even know if they allow shipping acid anymore to consumers, but the Scorpion batteries are shipped with the acid already in the battery absorbed in the glass mat so there is no liquid acid. No hazardous material fees or special shipping and you don't have to ever touch the acid. They also arrive already charged.

The only batteries I ever got shipped here before AGM were dry (empty) no acid and I had to buy the acid here. Still have the half empty box of acid I bought about 20 years ago before it became illegal to own or purchase it......

Motobatt AGM batteries ship fully charged and ready to install. Plus they have 2 set of battery posts, a bonus for me.
