Hello everyone,

I got an all stock, 1979 Kawasaki KZ 1000 LTD. Nothing has ever been changed and it only has 20,000 km on it. I have the original ignition coils on it but the one coil that powers cylinder 2 and 3 is having troubles. Seems like only cylinder number 2 is running and it is because the ignition coil is mangled and broken, I think that the number 3 cylinder is ok. I would like to know if I can just swap out the one wire for a new one and pop it back into place, or if I can get the original coil?
Thanks y'all

What ignition? Points? Igniter? Dyna-S? (to help determine most appropriate coil).

It's not feasible to attempt replacement of a plug wire on a coil having plug wires built in as an integral part of the coil.

If both coils are the original stock items, and one needs replacing, would replace the other one also.

Am thinking that Z1 Enterprises offers a good economy priced coil suitable for points and Dyna-S. The igniter style stock ignition uses a lower resistance coil that's perhaps slightly more costly.

When feasible, it's also a good idea to replace the old spark plug wires with new Dyna plug wires (I prefer the version with a solid metal core).

Good Fortune! :)

Everything is stock and has never been replaced. So it is all stock, all original coils and wires.

Everything is stock, every single thing including the igniter and stock points. All stock since it was made in 79. I want an original oem stock coil. My coil for 2 and 3 is screwed and I really need one badly.

including the igniter and stock points -- Nope, can't have both.

If the bike at hand has stock points ignition, it does NOT have an igniter.
If the bike at hand has stock electronic ignition, it also has an igniter (located behind the right-hand side cover -- "IC IGNITER").

According to kawasaki.com, either ignition system may be found as the stock component on a 1979 KZ1000-B3 LTD. That is to say either "points" or "electronic ignition."

Each system requires a different coil.
Points require 3.2~4.2Ω resistance coil.
Electronic ignition requires 1.2~1.9Ω resistance coil.

Points system will damage a 1.2~1.9Ω resistance coil.
Electronic ignition has a weaker than normal spark with 3.2~4.2Ω resistance coil.

May simply remove the "points cover" in order to see and confirm which type of ignition is fitted.

If different than either of the above, it might be a Dyna-S aftermarket electronic system (that replaces points and doesn't use the Igniter) and is supposed to use 3Ω coils.

Good Fortune! :)

An oem coil is going to be old. If your bike has points ignition, Z1Enterprises.com lists an Emgo 4 ohm coil but it's temporarily out of stock. You might be able to get it elsewhere. Others have reported that the Emgos work fine. Note: I do not know if you'll need to come up w alternate coil brackets or adapters (the mount spacing may not be the same as stock).

Partzilla shows NONE of these oem coils being currently available.
Could Google each part number to check for possible availability from other sources.

Good aftermarket coils are available from suppliers such as Z1 Enterprises.
www.z1enterprises.com/

NOS items may still be on hand at some dealer or aftermarket supplier.

Unless desired for a concours restoration, would go with aftermarket items.

Z1Enterprises.com has Dyna coils. I think another option is Accel, but I've never looked into those

About 30 years ago, I replaced my stock coils with Accel and the stock breaker points with Dyna-S. Set it and forget it, starts right up and never had to adjust the igniton, even though I've checked it occationally with a timing light. (Remember those? ) :cheer: The only issue I've ever had was that the crimp ends of the ignition wires at the spark plug, would loosen and pull off. Then I would have to fish the wire back through the cap and re- crimp it. Minor repair at worst.
Now putting the coils on to the stock mounting ears is another issue. Make sure you have plenty of nuts, bolts and washers to make them fit. This does take some garage engineering, but have faith, you can do it. Make sure the wiring and terminals do not ground out against the frame. This is true with the accel on my kz or the dyna coils I have on the GS 300 Suzuki.
