I was able to sand the back of my rotor and it seems to be working. I could definitely feel those grooves with my finger. How long it will last I can't predict.
When you say there's more wear on the top and bottom, I'm not sure I know what you mean. On my bike the bottom where the roller sits isn't the rotor. The roller sits on the starter clutch gear.
