Great....lost my key and can't find it anywhere! So....is there a place that sells ignition switch/seat latch combinations? Bike only had one key when I bought it and I didn't get around to getting another one made. Can you still get a key made without having the old one? I have a new switch but then those keys won't work the seat latch, so it's pretty much useless in this case. Anybody have a design on how to latch the seat securely without using the stock latch?

Good idea. Didn't know they could make a key without one to copy off of. Will look into it. Thanks.

I lost the key for on of my kz's a few years ago. I took a number of the ignition switch, phoned a locksmith and gave him the number. He made me a new key and mailed it to me. It worked fine. That would probably work for you too.

On the early KZ/Z the key code was stamped next to the Ign. keyhole or the seat lock keyhole.
Take the # to a local Locksmith, or I think there are even online places you can order it from.

If you can't find someone to cut it for you, I can probibly do it.

The key code will be in one of these series:

I think I found a bike dealer in town that can cut me a key. Will take the switch out and check it out tomorrow. If not, I will be spending some money at the locksmith.

How can the bike dealer cut a key if they don't have one to pattern it from? The key series on a Kaw key for many of the bigger KZs is 7xx. Look at your seat lock and get the number off your bike. I have been told by a locksmith that he could cut a new key if he had the proper blank AND had that number.

Perhaps there is another solution. We have thousands of members on this board. There were probably only a few key numbers used for any model... in other words if you parked 10 KZ900s next to each other, I bet I could start 2 or 3 with my key. This being the case, if you posted your key number, it is a real good possibility that SOMEONE will have that key or an extra they could give or loan you to get new ones made. The best way to do this would be to use a PM and post a note to a MOD and have them post the number (for your security). Then anyone who could help could PM the mod with their contact info and the person who lost their key (you) and the person who could help could get together privately.

Anyone think this is a good idea? I have several KZs... some don't have the original key but that 3 digit 7xx number is stamped on the seat lock.

The last key i had made i went to the dealer and he didn't have a blank. He sent me to a locksmith and the guy mad the key without using the original.

I have had the dealers just punch keys out of blanks.

I have had one locksmith to have me remove the seat lock and leave it hanging on his door and when i came back the next day my lock and key was on the door knob.

Not every lock smith had the tools, blanks,or information to make a key without a ignition switch or seat lock.

Ask a dealer who is the best locksmith in your area. They have probably used them. Roy

I have a dealer in town here who can make keys. He said that, at least in my case, he will have to take lock apart to do it. Sometimes that's not necessary, but this switch didn't have the back on it and he said he would have to take it apart then. Not sure why, but as long as I get keys, I really don't care. He takes a new Kawasaki key and makes it work in the older switches. Took it in tonight and will probably get it tomorrow.

I took my ignition, seat lock, and center stand lock to a lock smith by me and he made keys for them.
And I didn't have keys for any of them.
But know I have three different keys for my bike..

Keys made! The dealer took the switch apart and cleaned all the gunk from the rollers, etc. in there. He said he took a new style key and made it work for the old lock. He said he used the key number and then inserted the blank into the lock and it somehow told him where he needed to cut. All the cut-outs have a number...1,2,3 etc. and by using those numbers, he can cut any key for the lock. He has been doing this for awhile and keeps records of all the keys he makes so he can use that info to help make other keys. He makes keys most everyday for guys. He even told me he caught a bike thief when some guy came in with the top tree with the ingition switch and needed a key made. He just looked up who the key belonged to by the numbers and they didn't match so he called the cops.
