I have not done anything with valves. Don't think I have the tools for it. Would a valve issue come up out of the blue after running good for the last year?

Yes, they will get tighter with time. The one plug suggests a intake valve is too tight. I'd be willing to bet you have tight valves. Burn one, the head has to come off, now you're into REAL money.
Do yourself a favor and check them. Cheap insurance.

Do you check them by pulling the valve cover and measuring the clearance between the valve cap and the cam?

If your compression test shows good, I would start looking into the ignition next. Since it is 2 and 3 that are looking bad, I wonder if you can swap the coils to see if the problem moves to 1 and 4. OR it could be you have massive vac leaks on 1 and 4. Are you even sure it's running on all four cyclinders? You can spray water on the headers to determine if one or two cylinders are not firing. The water should dance off the cylinders that are firing.
