All,

I need some help. I am having some work done and am not sure what to do, so I am going to throw rocks at the hornets nest. I need to know what kind of air cleaner to run. Here is the work being done. 1976 kZ900 LTD, back cut transmission, welded crank, 1075 kit @ 10.5:1 compression, .400 lift cams with short duration, Intake boot port, exhaust ports opened up a bit as well, Vance & Hines sidewinder pipe. I have a set of 29MM SB’s that I am going to run. I have a stock airbox, with K&N air filter. I also have a modified airbox that the hole on the intake side of the air cleaner has been made bigger to flow more air that the K&N will fit into. My question is should I run one of my air boxes, or should I get K&N pods. Please let me know your thoughts. Want to try and figure out which way to go as if I am going to run pods, want to get them now. And if you guys vote pods, should I get the K&N, or is there another cheaper option that work as well? Lemme know guys. Thanks!!!!!

You may as well go for the pods. I'm not a fan of pods generally speaking, but with a modded bike such as yours pods seem like a natural.

APE pods are reputed to be nice and they are quite a bit cheaper than K&N's. I'd stay clear of Emgo's and the like.

I had pods on 29 s with a very similar engine package. I cant remember jetting as it has been many years , but I sorted it out and the bike ran great idle to full WOT and at mid range while cruising.

i run 20 pilots and 120 mains. You might start off higher on the mains, say 130 then work your way down if needed.

If you do remove the airbox - DON'T HURT IT and don't lose any of the related parts. They sell for quite a price on eBay. Ed

If you think you'll be riding in the rain ....then I suggest using the modified air box with the K&N filter.
