Ha! Annnnnd..... you're right. I made it about a mile and a half. Then the engine quit and wouldn't restart. I'll dig in to it tomorrow to see just how it failed.

Well, it failed completely. Though not at all in the way I thought it might. When things got warm it appears that the new sleeve on the clutch gear boss came in contact with the starter clutch housing. It locked it up and that meant that the starter motor was spinning along with engine rpm. It's totally shredded now.

I couldn't find anyone with a NOS gear to check the measurement for me and I had to make a guess based on the internal diameter of the starter clutch with a little wiggle room. I guess I didn't leave enough wiggle room.

I guess this is also going to be a kick start only bike for a while.

Here are some pics of the carnage.

So I still don't really know if the unhardened part would have worked out. The diameter of that boss clearly needed to be a touch smaller. It fit well and everything moved freely when it was cold. But I'm guessing it all changed when the engine got warm.

Well, when I break something I don't break it halfway anyway. ;)

I'll need a replacement starter, but actually everything else isn't too bad. The galling in the starter clutch housing can be sanded out and I've got another starter clutch gear and some spare starter clutch rollers (I think).

The starter might be hard to find. There are a couple on ebay, They seem a tad pricey to me given that none are certified as working. But I suspect I can find one.

That's about the price of most of the used/untested starters on ebay.

But I managed to snag one of those used ones for about $40 this morning. I'm hoping it'll be serviceable after a basic rebuild kit.

Was going to say you can have one of my spares for the cost of shipping B)

If you need any other 750 twin parts, I probably have them, believe I saw a starter gear the other day.

That's really generous Steell. If the ebay starter isn't rebuildable I may take you up on that. I'll pm you about the starter gear.

So the starter off eBay was toast. The commutator was all chewed up. So I'm in the market for a starter and starter clutch gear. Steell, I'll send you a PM.
