Would look for fat blue sparks on removed plugs while spinning over the engine.

Has a proper compression test been performed?

Insufficient valve clearance could cause the reported problems.

The clearances are relatively easy to "check" by measuring clearance of each valve with a thickness (feeler) gauge when the cam is pointed directly away from the valve.

The actual "adjustment," if needed, is more complicated.

Would at least "check" the valve clearances to determine whether they are all within specs.

If compression is low, insufficient valve clearance might be the reason.

Some auto parts stores such as Auto-Zone have a free tool loaner program which may include a compression tester.

Has the engine at hand ever run satisfactorily while in your possession, and if so, how long ago since it ran okay?

Or is the bike's past performance history and/or maintenance history unknown?

Good Fortune! :)

YES check valve clearences. ALSO unplug the plug wires from the spark plug boot/cap and look at the wires and make sure they are not corroded. with my 78 750 twin the ruber was complete dry rotted in there causing a bad connection. if you see it is rotted i suggest custting the plug wires down to where they are not rotted then reinstall the plug cap.

Tybo88, where are you? Post your town/ state Country whatever. Maybe someone is near for a hand, or some tools?
Remember on these bikes, do not touch the throttle when starting cold. Apply the choke, leave the throttle closed, and crank the starter. Remember to turn your Petcock to "Prime" for at least 30 seconds to fill the carbs with fuel.

to check clearences you find buy some feeler gages from autozone or and auto parts store, then take your valve cover off, you will notice the two camshafts, you will also notice they have lobes on them which when turned press down on the valves to open them. turn each lobes 1 at a time 180 degrees away from the valves and then use your feeler gages to see which one fits. when you get to the highest one that fits, that's your clearance.

BUT it sounds like your problem is electrical, if you held the throttle open and the carb slides while spraying starting fluid in all four carbs, and then trying to start and still got nothing, then your problem is most definitely electrical. It could be something as simple as a broken or disconnected wire in the harness when it is bent the wrong way there is no spark....

just saying your first step is to see if the problem is electrical, or mechanical.

ALSO NOTE that i would make sure the feeler gages you buy go all the way down to .001 inches

HERE I FOUND THIS FOR YOU, YOUR YEAR AND EVERYTHING

i know this guy is boring and EXTREMELY hard to listen to, but he will teach you.

remember that this is how to do an actual valve adjustment, but this will show you where the camshaft and lobes and valves are.
