Valve clearances was created by M. WATKINS
Hi,
I have just finished checking my valve clearances, all of which came out 0.10mm except 3 on the inlet side. 2 of which are 0.08mm and one which is at 0.05mm.

I know the factory spec is 0.08mm-0.18mm.

do you think it is worth me lifting the camshaft out for the one valve which is 0.03mm shy of its recomended clearance?

any hints, tips and guidance in this would be most appreciated.
Thanks all.

I'd do it now, here's why. If this valve was at minimum spec (0.08) the last time they were checked, say 6,000 miles ago, then we might expect the clearance to be 0.02 in another 6,000 miles. On the other hand, if it was 0.18 last time, you might be looking at 0.00 long before the next scheduled check. The gap will just keep getting smaller and the job will not be less tedious later.

I would go ahead and adjust at least the 3 tight ones. Ed

Set them to the largest acceptable spec. Your bike will idle best, sync easier, and get the best mileage. The trick is to get all of the intake valves the same and all of the exhaust valves the same. One or two valves set to the tight side of the spec can realy mess things up.

Or at least make sure they are away from the minimum. Original spec on mine is .002" - .004", later opened up to .002" - .006". I keep mine at .003" - .005".

.05mm is only .002inch, the bike might run ok cold but if gets any heat in the engine to speak of the intaker valve won't be closin all the way, and the engine might rev way too high art idle, it happened to me. As stated by just about everyone, set the intake valves on the wide side of the spec.

Would prepare a written record of each clearance measurement. Use a diagram to avoid later confusion. As a shim is removed, mark its size on the diagram. Would also include the date and mileage on the diagram.

Knowing the too tight shim size enables determining the needed new shim size (often one size thinner). Write the needed new shim size on the diagram.

Z1 Enterprises is a good source for new shims.

Be ultra-careful when reinstalling the cams, and follow the FSM exactly. But go extra easy when torquing the cam cap bolts as they may easily strip. Usually measured in INCH lbs -- not foot lbs -- and it's okay imo to use a lower "snug" number.

When finished, keep the diagram in a safe place for future reference.

Good time to also replace the gasket. An opportunity to thoroughly clean the mating surfaces while awaiting the new shims.

Good Fortune! :)

the exhaust valves run hotter. so if u are in dought about shim selection (inbetween shims) go with extra clearance.
