I need some help!!! I will try to make a long story short. Back in 1984 I took my friends 1982 GPZ1100 for a spin. From that time until now I have wanted one. A couple weeks ago I see one for sale near me. I buy it. At P.Os house it starts fine runs. It has stock fuel injection. Next day at home it does not start. I kill battery trying to start it. I charge battery and next day it starts. At this point the battery/warning light is flashing. Friday I put insurance and plates on it. Ride it around town, it starts to running rough at slow revs then just out right dies at 50km/30 miles/hour. The volt meter on bike says 10. So I recharge it over night check battery with multi meter and have 13.5 volt, bike still reads 10 volts and will not start.
Last night after starting to charge battery, I started taking apart every connector and spraying contact cleaner in them, blowing dry and reconnecting.
I do not have much experience do this stuff but I do look forward to attempting to getting this running, if not getting it running!!!!
My question is were do I start? What is my next step?

Nice bike! I really like the 1982's (note my signature)...do you have the official Kawasaki shop manual? If you do not, get it as it has an extensive electrical/FI troubleshooting section. With a multimeter, it holds you by the hand in walking through the electronics.

I think you need to start at the voltage reg/rec. and stator output. First thing to check is the black ground wire off the reg/rec unit for a good path to ground. Some bikes use a rubber mounted plate to the frame and then the reg/rec hangs on that plate. On many models the reg/rec ground wire is attached to that plate somewhere by model. Too much rust on the steel insert in the rubber grommet create a poor path to ground over time. I like to either a jumper wire from the reg/rec ground landing point straight to the Neg, battery post. Or cut the reg/rec wire and do a clean water tight connection that leads to the Neg. battery post. With freshly charged battery start the bike and let it run for a few. Touch the reg/rec unit. If it too hot to leaver your finger on it it's toast. Next with a multimeter check the battery voltage at 4000 RPM's. You want to see close to 14.5 vts. If the reading is to low and the reg/rec unit too hot to touch. Remove the chain side cover. You will find three wires coming the stator that have bullet connects. Test the stator output between those wires. The output should be close to 50 volts between any two wires at 4000 RPM. That should get you started.

you should never need to crack a gpz1100 efi engine,

i owned one of these for yrs and if they don't start first time its a fuel problem,

take off the seat,
remove the air filter box,
drain and flush your tank with fresh fuel,
remove and flush fuel filter,
reinstall and fill the tank with fresh gas,
the air box is attached to the speed sensor,
in side this is what i call a cat flap,
with ignition turned on open the flap,
you should hear the fuel pump sucking fuel
through the system and back into the tank.

once this is done give it a start,

good luck.

I have ordered a manual, it should be here first part of next week.
I am going to try Kano's idea first, because I have the ability to do this stuff!!!
If that does not work, will try hoghaterkaw's idea. I have a buddy who is a ltte bit or a wrench coming over this afternoon.
Also I replace the vaccum lines last night, they did not have any holes. I check them with compressed air.
Thanks

I think it's a charging issue because the battery keeps going dead and the warning light is coming on. Also have the battery checked by a load test.

Bullseye. If you ride around and the battery goes dead, it's not charging the battery.

The 1981 and 1982 had two different FI systems. The 1980 Classic and the 1981 GPZ had the same system, which incorporated the airflow/temp meter, which was located under the seat. The 1982-84 system had the DFI system which only used the air temp sensor which was a little device inside the air box. On the black throttle position sensor, which is located on the side of the throttle bodies, are there the letters DFI, if so than you will not have the old flap stile of Airflow/temperature sensor. You may have clogged or defective injectors or a faulty fuel pump. Check the fuel pressure to the injectors. You may also have a stuck fuel return check valve, which will create excessive fuel pressure, flooding out the engine.

when you say wont start do you mean it wont turn over or it wont fire? if its an older battery id pull it out and have it load tested,if it has some weak cells the voltage could be dropping when you put a load on it B)
Still recovering, some days are better than others.
