I know there are other posts on overheating and oil coolers but i wanted to try to get a more specific answer.
I have a 1974 z1 it has a kz1000 jug 1045 10.25:1, port and polished, over sized valves,36mm mikuni flatslides, dyna 2000 and coils, largest hotstreet web cams sold, taylor wires, ngk iridium plugs standard heat range. completely rebuilt last year
basically i don't know what temperature a kz1000 a should run at. my heat gun reads about 295 to 305 on the head and 240 on the jug, it warms up quickly and stays constant. i tested a friends kz1000 with similar modification and it was running around that as well. ive had my bike dyno'd (if any one wants to read the chart i could post) it is a little rich in bottom end and dead on in the top end, the bike isnt running lean, but after i ride it around for about a hour or so it starts getting hard to shift between gears and doesnt like to idle and the engine feels pretty hot the heat gun still only says around 300. im running 10w40 amsoil in it right now and going to switch to 20w 50 next oil change.
I don't have a oil cooler and id like to install one, but i still don't know what size to put on it and how to run the oil channels. also i know a z1's oil pressure is only like 10 psi so would that be a problem with a oil cooler? ive tested my oil pressure i get about 12 to 15psi around 4000 rpm.
sorry if my text is confusing and thxs for any replys
just as a reference, my bike runs at 200 after 45 mins of stop and go and cruising mix with slight goodies...i think the 10.5 to 1 is the heat maker...i m running an old school cooler that i think was a popular one back in the day...i saw a new one in the box a ways back on ebay and looking back, i should have grabbed it......i run a temp guage and a pressure guage just to keep tabs.......keith

im gonna say as far as your overheating issue id definately run an oil cooler .youve basically got a healthy dragbike motor that would be fine a 1/4 mile at a time with a cool down between passes ,but stop and go traffic with those cams and carbs is going to keep it loaded up causing your overheating issue.
oh my aint that purdy, rest of bike looks pretty nice also!

depending on what youve got for a rear tire low 11s aint really bad for not knowing what youre doing, just practice getting down the track in one piece and the times will improve with practice ! id be willing to bet if you dropped down to the 29-31mm area in carb selection youd be pleasently suprised with the improvement in drivability and your luck at the track

Adding fuel mixture, cools the motor temp. In my opinion, I would rather be spot on at a idle and a touch, rich wide open. It buys me a safety zone!
You may also try retarding the timing. If you fire the motor at a later time, the motor has a longer cooling peroid.
Gear ratio - Every motor! electric or gas, has a speed that it likes to operate at. At that one speed, everything just clicks, the flow, engine temp, timing, fuel mixture, etc.
The age old trick, is to find that spot?? Gear ratio and riding style, affect engine temp.
Then, if you adjust to the problem and reduce the heat, buy an oil cooler, they look cute.
PS- If you lean the mixture, temp goes up. If you advance the timing, temp goes up. Wrong gearing, temp goes up.
I guess all you can do, is reduce cylinder temp or reduce cylinder pressure.............Take it for what, it's worth!

thxs man for all the info.
for where my bike likes to run it likes to cruise around 70 to 80 all day i do have a 530 chrome x ring chain with sprockets to match, z1 enterprises recommended it to me for less weight im pretty much as high as they go on the front and rear that they sell. still tops out around 140mph not 160 but not bad.
