Hi Pablo
I don't have a z1r, but since no one else has responded, I'll try to help. This is out of my manual for a 1980 kz 1000 e2. It calls for 10w fork oil, but I changed to 15w and I like the ride alot better. Others here have said they use 20w, fork oil is cheap so you can experiment and see which weight works for you. As far as the level, my manual says about 310cc when changing oil - 336cc to 344cc when completely dry..... level should be 480mm from the top of the fork tube without the springs, 470mm for european model.
Keep in mind this is for my bike. maybe someone else will know if your forks are the same.
Good Luck
sp

Not sure about the levels, but i recomend 20w fork oil, it made a big difference on my bike.

Z1R (D model) and Shaft (E model) fork differences

Hi, Pablo.
ˇRecepción a KZRider! :)

From Kaw service manuals:

'78 KZ1000-A2A, '79 A3A, '80 A4 and D3
The D3 was called the Z1R-II. My manual doesn't mention the '79 D2 Z1R - I don't think it was sold in the USA that year. I think it is a safe bet the D2 has the same forks as the D3 and the various A models.

Front suspension stroke 140 mm
Front fork oil capacity (each fork) 180 ~ 188cc completely dry, about 160 cc when changing.
Oil level 420 mm from top of inner tube. No mention of removing spring and diagram implies spring remains installed for level check. Diagram shows measuring rod should be exactly at centerline of tube.
Front fork oil type SAE 10W20

The 1979 KZ1000-E1 and '80 E2 have a different front fork and the specs are as sixpk said:
Stroke 200 mm
Capacity 340 cc (336-344 dry, 310 when changing.)
Oil level WITHOUT SPRINGS 480 mm from top of inner tube.
Oil type SAE 10W recommended (but makes fork way too soft).
